Country home plans have a simplistic nature offering practicality, functionality and comfort while delivering the appearance of a much larger home. Warm and inviting, country house plans feature recognizable exterior elements such as a gabled roofline running parallel to the road, dormers, covered front porches and window shutters. Country home plans range in size from a simple starter home with the basic necessities to a sprawling and luxurious layout filled with plenty of extras. One of North America’s most popular home plan styles, Country house plans are closely related to Craftsman house plans, farmhouse plans, Southern home plans and Victorian designs.
Sometimes referred to as old-fashioned farmhouses, most of today’s country floor plans are far from it. Many incorporate today’s most requested features and up-to-date amenities. Most take advantage of a comfortable, covered front porch. With the living room generally positioned at the front of most country designs, a porch extends the living room making the floor plans seem larger than they actually are. Also, the porch serves as a transition between the indoors and outdoors. Country living house plans typically have large family gathering areas such as a country kitchen or an open floor plan, while bedrooms are clustered together and separated from the living areas for privacy either on one side of the home or on the second level. Generally, the living areas flow together providing flexible space to accommodate a variety of activities. It is not uncommon that a characteristic fireplace anchors the main gathering space and delivers cozy warmth. Many of these designs incorporate a detached or setback garage. In some instances, country floor plans reveal touches of elegance commonly found with their Victorian home plan cousins. The most identifiable characteristics of these more distinguished country Victorian designs include spacious, covered wrap-around porches with an open railing, turrets and ornate details and trim. In other instances, country and European flavors mix. Country French designs are fashioned with a touch of European flair while still providing comfortable and relaxing accommodations.
